In a fieldwork blog post Saara Toukolehto ponders about relative discourses of place through which her interlocutors both described as well as manipulated the sense of place attached to Itäkeskus in East Helsinki. Such relativization is intriguing in relation to the topological approach to the study of everyday coexistence that we’ve adopted in Co-Imagine.

BLOG POST: The distant others and conferencing in troubled times

In this blog post we reflect on our work sessions at this year’s ETMU conference. The conference theme – ‘breaking barriers’ – cannot be separated from the broader context of an escalated state violence with regard to migration control and authoritarian tendencies that shape contemporary politics. In this context, migration scholars need to rethink what constitutes meaningful scholarship.

ANTHROMOB WORKSHOP 2025: ‘FEELINGS ON THE MOVE‘

On 11-12 September 2025 we participated in the EASA AnthroMob Network workshop in the Hague, Netherlands. In our contribution, we focused on intersubjectivity by looking at how ‘implication’ (Rothberg 2019) guides the affective realities that unfold between differentially positioned people at the level of everyday encounters.

PROGRAM PUBLISHED: ETMU CONFERENCE 2025

The program for the ETMU 2025 conference has been published. Our two-part work session “Visualizing Invisible Barriers” will take place on Thursday and Friday, 13-14 November. On the first day we’ll host a panel session, and on the second, visual storyteller Yorgos Konstantinou facilitates a workshop on visual language!

Submit your abstract to our work session on visual methods by August 24th! In it we will explore how deep mapping, narrative mapping and other types of visualizations may serve as analytical tools to better understand the complex tension between inclusion and exclusion shaping everyday existence.
